‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?
Phototherapy is certainly having a surge in popularity. You can now buy illuminated devices designed to address complexion problems and aging signs along with muscle pain and periodontal issues, the latest being a dental hygiene device outfitted with small red light diodes, described by its makers as “a major advance for domestic dental hygiene.” Worldwide, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. According to its devotees, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, enhancing collagen production, relaxing muscles, relieving inflammation and long-term ailments as well as supporting brain health.
Research and Reservations
“It appears somewhat mystical,” observes a neuroscience expert, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Of course, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, as well, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones while we are awake, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Sunlight-imitating lamps frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to elevate spirits during colder months. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.
Different Light Modalities

Risk Assessment and Professional Supervision
Potential UVB consequences, such as burning or tanning, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – signifying focused frequency bands – that reduces potential hazards. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, thus exposure is controlled,” explains the dermatologist. Most importantly, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where oversight might be limited, and emission spectra aren’t confirmed.”
Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty
Red and blue LEDs, he notes, “aren’t typically employed clinically, though they might benefit some issues.” Red light devices, some suggest, improve circulatory function, oxygen uptake and cell renewal in the skin, and stimulate collagen production – an important goal for anti-aging. “Research exists,” states the dermatologist. “However, it’s limited.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, how close the lights should be to the skin, if benefits outweigh potential risks. There are lots of questions.”
Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions
Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, bacteria linked to pimples. Research support isn’t sufficient for standard medical recommendation – despite the fact that, notes the dermatologist, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he mentions, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. Without proper medical classification, the regulation is a bit grey.”

At the same time, in innovative scientific domains, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he says. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that it’s too good to be true. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.
The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, though twenty years earlier, a doctor developing photonic antiviral treatment consulted his scientific background. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he explains. “I was quite suspicious. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, which most thought had no biological effect.”
What it did have going for it, nevertheless, was that it travelled through water easily, allowing substantial bodily penetration.
Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits
More evidence was emerging at the time that infrared light targeted the mitochondria in cells. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, generating energy for them to function. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” says Chazot, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is consistently beneficial.”
With specific frequency application, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In limited quantities these molecules, explains the expert, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”
All of these mechanisms appear promising for treating a brain disease: free radical neutralization, swelling control, and cellular cleanup – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
Ongoing Study Progress and Specialist Evaluations
Upon examining current studies on light therapy for dementia, he states, several hundred individuals participated in various investigations, incorporating his preliminary American studies
