Jair Bolsonaro taken into custody after being deemed a risk of fleeing

Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
