Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in various fields.
